Volunteer Spotlight

Amer Alahmar

Amer is a web developer by day and a voice engineer by night. He has a bachelor’s degree in computer science, and he is part of another NGO called Consortium for Health Action.

Since he joined Istanbul&I on April 27, 2021, he has been participating in the Sokak Lambası and Yedikule Animal Shelter projects. He also joined the IT team to manage I&I’s website, helped organize the storytelling workshop, and became a teaching assistant in the Arabic Course project.

In his free time, you will find him reading, cooking, coding, or having debates all over the internet.

“From the moment we were born, life started giving us what I like to call the ultimate free-care package—the air we breathe, the sun to keep us warm, the night to get us wandering in our thoughts, the oceans to look at and see the infinite future, the earth, the stars, the skies…and most importantly other human beings to live with! In Arabic, we have this proverb that can roughly be translated to ’A paradise without people, is not worth going to.

“The way I see it, volunteering is not something we choose to do; it’s something we have to do. It’s the only appropriate way to thank the universe for giving us the care package, to pay our debts back to life, to contribute to the community and make the world a better place for all of us. If you think about it this way, you will realize that volunteering is a lifestyle. When you give your chair to someone who needs it more, or help elders carry their bags, or even pet an animal in the street, it’s all volunteering!

“At Istanbul&I, we help each other remember this, and we make volunteering easier on us in a loving, caring, and optimistic environment. Since I joined Istanbul&I on April 27, 2021, I couldn’t help myself but to keep engaged and eager to do more; I have participated in the Sokak Lambası and Yedikule Animal Shelter projects, joined the IT team, helped organize the storytelling workshop, and became a teaching assistant in the Arabic Course project.”
